i am mexican... but yeh, i am navajo apache descent.. american indians wont acknowledge it b/c they live in america while the navajo apche i descent from lived in mexico and in mexico they dont have tribal nations or documentation for native ppl.
plus a lot of indians in mexico are more national then ethnic differentiation.
if i was born in texas they would have had me as native american/mexico.
but like to point out that is not my natural color tone. i am pretty dark there b/c of over 6 months of iraqi hot sun living.
but i have native indian tattoos to acknowledge my indian side.. like the thunder bird which is meso american symbol of a native as well as a native american symbol for various native tribes.
its like white is white in united states to my mother mexican brown or indian is brown so that is how i was brought up by my mother.
what is funny.. when i was invited to the powwow in nevada when they had one for the braves a lot of the native americans were surprised about my knowledge about some of the ceremonies.
i was like yeh, mexicans natives do that events where we go to for mexican pride heritage in california..
they were like really?
i was yeh, pretty much the same ceremony to celebrate the sky spirit/gods..
like drinking of cactus juices with hallucinogens.. you ask my mom about mexican indian ceremonies she will talk about shroom teas and whatnot and talk about the indian origin of it, talk about quilts blankets she gets sad that it has bn lost to our culture.
plus in my family we had a spirit guide thing as well where the 1st animal that you see when you are born will be your spirit animal/guide.. there are also ceremonies where if you dont have one when you get older you have to find one by goin off into the nature.
my mom and nana taught me more about living off the land then the military could ever hope to teach me from what plants to eat and how to use them for healing and whatnot..
a lot of ppl forget the mexicans is just a name given to us and forget about our indian heritage thinking we just magically sprang up speaking spanish.
a lot of "spanish words" for certain foods and plants or animals are indian in nature which are the same as other native american tribes.. like Mace or masa
a lot of ppl dont know that a lot of the american tribes near the cali boarders were under aztec rule or that they did yearly migration for trade with the indians of mexico.
