While I can't say this is surprising, you can only tempt death so many times before losing, he seemed like a very nice guy.

I heard the news on the radio in the car a bit before 3pm, i was soo shocked. I never expected this to happen, and to Steve Irwin. Since then there has been so many new reports about his death tonight. I cried alot, he was such a awesome guy. He was an Australian Icon and loved by everyone. On a positive note he died doing something he loved.

You will be sadly missed, you made us Aussies proud 🙂

That's the only good thing I can take from it. That he died doing what he truly loved. A true hero and inspiration to all of us animal lovers!

I live in Cairns and was shocked when I herd about it.

I thought he'd most likely die from a crock, rather than a ray, but oh well. R.I.P man.

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called “Ocean’s Deadliest” when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

“He came on top of the stingray and the stingray’s barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart,” said Stainton, who was on board Irwin’s boat at the time.... (more on the link)

I've vowed that I will take up the word "Crikey!" in a tribute to him and use it whenever I feel necessary. I will use this as an impression, not as an attempt to insult or make fun in any way.

oh man, I nearly cried this morning when I found out. I'm really upset, thats an awful way to go, I hope he wasn't in a lot of pain 🙁
