Who else thought Burgess Merideth was a better Penguin then Danny Devito?

I do! at least in the comics he wasn't born a mutant freak but a real criminal with a crooked nose and looked like a penguin, Merideth was just right for the part in the classic campy 60's show and movie cause i thought he had the look and voice for the character.

Burton's take on the character was different...not bad in my opinion though.

However, I can't stand the whole "campy is good" thing from the 60s tv show. I hate everything about it. Probably because I didn't grow up with it since I'm only 19. So everything about that show sucks to me lol and I just can't consider any of the portrayals to be the best.

Merideth was great in Grumpy/Grumpier Old Men though lol.

As much as I loved Danny Devito as the Penguin I have to say that for me Burgess Merideth will always be a better Penguin... he just did it so brilliantly... and it was closer to the comic's version of him as well, even though Danny Devito did a great job with Burton's take on the character, still... for me the Penguin of the 60's is the true one.

I pfer the currant, mobster Penguin in-comics honestly... but I do love the 60s show and would rate it far higher than the heresy that was DeVito as Pengy...

I thought that DeVito did a piss poor job.

✅ I agree there, Bada. BR was far weaker than B89 and, in all honesty, DeVito was the no. 1 reason!

I love them both.

Meredith's Penguin was very faithful to the Penguin of that time. Heck all the characters on the show were faithful to the comics back then.

Myself. Burges Meredith was the penguin in person. Danny Devito was playing a stupid freak who is totally opposite to the character. Plus, his acting and the script was awful.

I agree with everything that John Lindsey, badabing and bakerboy said.I could not have said it better myself. The only thing i will add on is that Devito who is normally great in all his films, was just really stupid in this movie with his acting. He was trying way too hard to be funny and was not funny at all where Burgesss Meridith was a natural and did not have to try to be funny. Also all that makeup Burton had Devito put on was really stupid and unnessary.

Well... Danny Devito did a very good job at playing what Burton wanted him to play... a mutant Penguin person who grew up in the sewers with ex circus performers... LOL!

Burgess Merideth on the other hand did a very good job at playing a comic book character known as the Penguin back in the 60's.

They are/were both great and talented actors playing the parts that were given to them... its not Danny Devito's fault he was a mutant, of Burgess Merideth's fault that the Batman of the 60's was so damn campy.

Yeah I dont blame Devito for his bad acting,I put most of that on Tim Burton. He's the director and he was just doing what Burton instructed him to do.Ive always blamed mostly Burton for the failures of the first two films shortcomings

As cheesy and corny as the Batman TV show was in the 60's. Merideth portrayal of The Penguin is the best far above Devito.

I like Danny DeVito as an actor but his Penguin was horrible!
The worst Penguin ever!!

So, I gotta say that Burgess was the BEST!

Damnit, am i the only one that thought BR was awesome and so was devito...ohh well, i liked it, Nickolson as Joker was far better and one of the best villians to date but devito had his moments...

I loved DeVito too.

I actually thought they both did fairly well in the roles... I mean, it is the same character, but different eras... and I like both actors in the role, in their era.

They both sucked...

I dunno but I always thought that Joe Pesci would made a better Penguin that D. Devito would.

I loved Burgess Meredith. But I gotta say that I enjoyed them both as the Penguin.

My love for Burgess is really due to his signature role.....Balboa's trainer in the Rockies. How could one not have fallen in love with Mickey?
