How To Steal an Election With a Diebold Machine ...

'The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.' - Joseph Stalin

'Some Princeton researchers made a demonstration video of how it's possible to steal an election with a Diebold voting machine in under a minute. Anyone with physical access to the machine can put in malicious software to steal votes—such as election workers who have unsupervised access to the machines before elections.

All they have to do is open up the machine with a key (or pick the lock), remove the old memory card, stick in your own memory card, boot the machine, and it automatically installs any software that was on the memory card.'

happy voting.

I knew those ****ing old ladies at the desk where I go and vote were changing everything around. Shame on them..hiding disks containing malicious software (that they created in their grandchildrens basements no doubt) in the cushions of their wheelchairs.

Yes, thats why electronic voting should not be used. But honestly, since you like to engage in mass hysteria, couldn't they just change the paper ballots anyway? Or just say that the final count is somehting different?

*already knew but likes the thread n vid anyway*

yes, and its been done. however the instant addition of malicious software is far less work than what it takes to manipulate tens of thousands of paper ballots. i hardly see any justification for just shrugging it all off

im not an expert on the matter.

i just wanna ask this question to voters:

do you think voting for a new puppet..sorry i mean president..do u think it is gonna change earths woes?

lol but people get so caught in this irrelevant tripe, as if their vote will change anything. 'who do you think we should vote for? what do
you think about Bush on the economy and Kerry on defence? blah blah.

People condemn politicians for thinking only in terms of self interest and what’s in it for me. But what is in the hearts and minds of most voters when they are deciding which party to support? Yes, precisely: self interest and what’s in it for me. If that is our motivation when we vote, we will, and do, create that reality by electing politicians who reflect in their actions the very state of mind that we used to give them their power. If you want to change the kind of politicians that represent us, change yourself. If people still think it is worth voting in today’s rigged system (I don’t), then let us vote for what we believe is right and not only for what we believe is right for us, materially, in the short term. Then, if this is done by enough people, we will have politicians that manifest that state of mind.

indeed
It is a very legitimate issue.

"Will The Next Election Be Hacked?"

Fresh disasters at the polls -- and new evidence from an industry insider -- prove that electronic voting machines can't be trusted

ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR.

. . . It's not surprising that the widespread problems with electronic voting machines have sparked such outrage and mistrust among voters. Last November, comedian Bill Maher stood in a Las Vegas casino and looked out over thousands of slot machines. "They never make a mistake," he remarked to me. "Can't we get a voting machine that can't be fixed?"

Indeed, there is a remarkably simple solution: equip every touch-screen machine to provide paper receipts that can be verified by voters and recounted in the event of malfunction or tampering. "The paper is the insurance against the cheating machine," says Rubin, the computer expert.

In Florida, an astonishing new law actually makes it illegal to count paper ballots by hand after they've already been tallied by machine. But twenty-seven states now require a paper trail, and others are considering similar requirements. In New Mexico, Gov. Bill Richardson has instituted what many consider an even better solution: Voters use paper ballots, which are then scanned and counted electronically. "We became one of the laughingstock states in 2004 because the machines were defective, slow and unreliable," says Richardson. "I said to myself, 'I'm not going to go through this again.' The paper-ballot system, as untechnical as it seems, is the most verifiable way we can assure Americans that their vote is counting."

Paper ballots will not completely eliminate the threat of tampering, of course - after all, election fraud and miscounts have occurred throughout our history. As long as there has been a paper trail, however, our elections have been conducted with some measure of public scrutiny. But electronic voting machines are a hacker's dream. And today, for-profit companies are being given unprecedented and frightening power not only to provide these machines but to store and count our votes in secret, without any real oversight.

You do not have to believe in conspiracy theories to fear for the integrity of our electoral system: The right to vote is simply too important - and too hard won - to be surrendered without a fight. It is time for Americans to reclaim our democracy from private interests.

A serious issue trivialized by the paranoid ramblings of Deano. I think he actually works for the people he says he fears, for just the mere mentioning of any issue by him makes it now a sad joke in the eyes of many.

Where do you think I was sitting when I tyoed that? And way to ignore the reality and severity of the issue by making a mockery of it.
