As soon as she took his hand he got a large shock. It was like he'd touched fire and wanted to pull his hand away. But, just as any burn, the roaring fire died down. In that instant though, he knew he could have died. He swallowed a lump in his throat, glancing down at her as she looked away. His breathing had unwillingly increased, fear drifting off of him from that one little moment of realization. This wasn't a game. He had been forcefully dragged into it. There was no prize for him. He was just a pawn in the game of chest. A knight stood over him, reading to knock him off the board at any second. While the queen stood behind, also ready to shatter him and cancel him useless in the game. The queen was her. The girl that stood in front of him. The girl that had given him that shock. The knight... He didn't want to think about it.
When instead of ripping his arm off and using it as a nice little crutch or chew toy, she shook his hand, he felt his own body relax. The tensed muscles slowly melted into a comfortable figure. He still couldn't meet her eyes, because she refused to raise them. Now her touch seemed like ice. It still hurt to an extent, cold, smooth, slippery. But ice shakes. If you notice it close enough, you can see it trembling. What was she scared of?
Slowly letting her hand go, he dropped his own to his side. He tilted his head to the side, meeting her gaze whether she wanted him to or not, and smiling. He didn't know what she seemed so startled about, but he was determined to find out. She'd helped him, why couldn't he return the favor? Maybe.. Maybe she regretted being a monster as much as he did? He chewed along his lower lip, somehow unable to think of her as a monster.
"I'm glad. I trust you."
He lifted his head up and looked around the forest. Listening carefully, he could hear a fight. He trembled at the snarls and growls, the way the forest cried upon seeing them. It was an uncontrollable tremor that crawled through his bodice and latched onto him like a chain. He couldn't pull free, he just trembled, eyes suddenly wide and pupils small and dim. He leaned back against the tree, closing his eyes tightly and willing his body to keep still. Finally, it relaxed, leaving him breathless and gasping as he slid down to sit upon the grass. The noises continued, but the rapid beating of his heart partially drowned them out.
