Hindsight is always easy. However fact remains that Japan could have won that war. Them attacking first could have been a huge mistake or it could have given them victory...

America came into the war at near enough at the last minute and start getting all la de da saying we won the war, there was nothing to win, you nuked another country that's ****ing awful. To nuke another country is insane and barbaric, America was warned by greats such as Einstein not to use the bomb and still did. Herishimo is still feeling the enormous consequences of America's actions today with birth defects and cancer causing chemicals. Next time you talk in jest of nuking other countries think how it must be for children to be brought into the world with an uncertain future because of America's actions decades ago.
Korean War, as it showed that we do have a degree of self-restraint. Why?
Because we refused to let MacArthur use a total of 53 (or was it 59? ...hmmm...) Atom Bombs on both North Korea and China. One of the most famous generals we'd ever had, and we were able to tell him "no" when we really needed to.

Please, please actually do your research before you decide to say any decision was "stupid."
At the rate their progress was moving throughout Asia, and the deterioting state of relations between the US, they knew that both sides would have to face off eventually. Hell, the US openly threatened Japan if they continued to wage war in Asia. With the military's reluctance to actually comply and back down, it was inevitable that Japan would be drawn into conquest with the US.
Pearl Harbor was launched for the sole purpose of wiping out our Pacific Fleet, the carriers especially, so that there was a chance that Japan could solidify control over Asia before we were able to pose a significant threat; or the least likely result of the US backing down entirely. The only reason that we weren't outright massacred in the war with Japan is because our carriers weren't there. Hell, the blow to morale was made exponentially greater when it took us years to win a single naval battle against them; and they were more starved for resources and oil than we were!
Also, if your history teacher ever tells you that America has never been invaded? Tell him or her that they're lying outright. Most people were never taught this, but Japan did invade us. Alaska, to be specific, and it was far from easy to get them out. They also dropped bombs on the US mainland, with limited accuracy; they were fastened to large balloons and the winds carried them to the US. There was only one bomb that actually inflicted civilian casualties, and that was a family on a picnic in the Northwest (either Washington or Oregon, I can't for the life of me remember which it was right now).
They came close to wiping us out in the Philippines after we returned as well; research "Operation Shogo" when you get the time. The only, ONLY thing that kept the soldiers that had only recently landed on the beach from being slaughtered by naval bombardments is a Destroyer group codenamed Taffy 3.
Their war with us wasn't "stupidity" no matter how much you want to believe it. Had luck not been on our side at Pearl Harbor, the entire conflict could have ended much, much differently.

No, we just help other people when theirs. And even with the Naval support of the French, we still fought all of the battles during the Revolution by ourselves. We pushed the British to the sea and the French held them their. 1812 was by ourselves anyway.

...hate to be the one to say this; but we got our asses kicked in the War of 1812. Only major victory came AFTER the treaty was signed >.>;
The US and Britain got into a fight over where Canada's border REALLY was, Britain wound up burning the White House to the ground (wasn't called the White House then, but moot point), and generally kicking Yankee ass everywhere they went. Only major victory we scored against them was in a naval battle after the treaty was signed to end the war (...and set Canada's border just about where it was BEFORE everybody started shooting one another).

So one of those pointless wars that doesn't achieve anything then?

That'll teach Uncle sam the perils of screwing with the world's best military, then. Remember that around this time We (Yes 'We' with a capital W cos Britain was so great. it's not now, but blaim Blair.) were pawning France AND Spain, two major powerful nations, on land AND at sea.
Thanks for the info, Seth. I never knew about that war, which is disappointing as I consider history to be a strong point of mine.
