why would they be so quick to have him resign? to avoid investigation? its just so obviously a result of the election results.
Bush hoping that by appeasing Pelosi/Dems, they won't investigate Rummy. Doubt it will work, Rumsfield is most likely headed to the senate war crimes investigations. Though in the end, I doubt he'll be charged with anything serious, mostly just a show.

I don't quite see it that way. If there was a whole lot to find on this guy, he might not be so ballsy in his approach. As Bill Maher has said, Rumsfeld may be wrong all the time, but he makes no apologies for it.
I'm more leaning towards the part of your opinion that he was a peace offering with a twist. I think the administration knew this election wasn't going to go well for them, and Rumsfeld knew days ago that if it was going to go as badly for them as it has, that his time was up. Don't forget all the Republicans that were calling for his resignation going into the election. They never would have broken rank around him if they didn't know he was going to go. This was most likely to make the administration look like they're making jestures of cooperation. This way, when the administration starts trying to strong arm congress and the whole situation comes to a grinding halt due to gridlock, they can say they've been trying to get along the whole time, but the democrats are being unreasonable.

I wasn't implying Rumsfield is dirty as a fact... I do agree that if he was hiding something serious, he wouldn't be the "Yea, what!?" type he is. It's why I said if he does get investigated, nothing serious will happen.
Agreed, rats always flee a sinking ship and it will be fun watching the Bush admin play around with congress now.
