Actually, Kyle had used it first. He tried to trap Solaris but couldn't so he threw the ring into Solaris trying to trick solaris into thinking that it was kryptonite.

Solaris, thinking it was kryptonite, expelled it into the sun that Prime was sleeping in, thinking it would kill Prime.
