This guy knows what he's talking about.
From this perspective there is just one flaw in the construction of the story. After the first attempt to lift the curse fails and Will helps Elizabeth escape the cave, she grabs the medallion before fleeing. Why does she? She knows it’s what the pirates are after. By taking it she ensures the pirates would continue to pursue her. By leaving it, she’d be free of them.
Maybe it’s not a story flaw after all. Maybe, being a pirate at heart, she just can’t help herself…
I appreciated too the symbolism of the dresses that Elizabeth receives. Elizabeth finds the life offered by the likes of Norrington and her father to be stifling, and this becomes literally true when she puts on the constricting dress of virginal white from her father (who thus wraps her like a gift to Norrington) and nearly suffocates. On the other hand, the blood-red dress given to her by Barbossa, a pirate, suits her to a T — because she’s a pirate at heart.
Also, what I liked about the blog was that it re-emphasized that though the story appears to be Will's, it's actually Elizabeth who develops most as a character. Why does she do the things that she does?
It's simple: because of her fascination with pirates. It makes her path in DMC and ultimately in AWE all the more understandable. Also, interesting that she also notted that her fascination with Will stems from her interest in pirates i.e. that sort of bodes well for Sparrabeth, in my opinion. If you look at it, well who freed her from the dresses and encouraged to explore her pirate nature.
