It would be so cool if Gibbs knew Jack during the time he worked for Beckett, went their separate ways for a time, and then teamed up together in Tortuga. It seems like if Jack got ousted for doing something really noble, Gibbs would go along with it and rebel against the rest. He's pretty loyal to Jack except in COTBP when he told Liz they already got the Pearl so there was no need to go back for him.
Everyone's entitled to a moment of weakness.
Gibbs obviously doesn't know about Jack's past before Jack appeared in Tortuga - I think he says as much in the first movie. He wasn't on the ship during the mutiny, but Jack apparently didn't make a secret out of the fact that he was left to die by Barbossa and wanted revenge, so I guess quite a lot of people knew what happened (besides, TnT stated that Jack wants people to believe he went mad during his stay on the island, so I guess he spread the story around himself).
Gibbs' story has been retold by either Ted or Terry at wordplayer. Unfortunately, I didn't save the exact quote, but (as we already know) Gibbs started out in the Royal Navy until he was fired because of a certain fondness for the bottle. He went to Tortuga and that's where he met Jack. There isn't more to his story than that and I think the important people who know about Jack's REAL past are Bootstrap Bill (because Bill apparently WAS on the Wicked Wench) and possibly Barbossa.
About Barbossa and the whores: I don't think Scarlett and Giselle are really important to the story, sorry ... ;-)
Here's a logistical question related to indirectly Barbossa. How was it that Elizabeth kept the medallion for all those years and wasn't cursed? Jack only had it for a short amount of time and he became cursed. Is it possible that the soul's purity has something to do with who it is that becomes cursed, and who doesn't?
I really agree wiff what willow said..about Jack being a "pansy" as a captain..well he's not really a pansy but in terms of being a "pirate captain" he is....
so maybe he thought that the crew will mutiny ANYWAYS so it best be him who leads it so he can at least get some profit from it and become captain..and he already hated jack for some reason and he knew if he sides with jack the crew will just go against him as well
"Well, Hector is actually a fanon creation that Ted and Terry have agreed to make canon and Barbossa is probably more of a play off the Greek word barbaros which later lead to Barbarian and barbarous although there was also the Turkish pirate Barbarossa."----ericadawn
Really? Going Greek, Hector was a major player in the Trojan War, although nothing like the Barbossa we all know and love. That's pretty cool.
i wouldnt say friends, probably more like colleagues who respected each other (until the mutiny).
i would reckon barbossa (along with many of the pirates) were half-european, half-carib. lots of european settlers married native islanders once they got down to the carib. Jack is apparantly half-indian or something, right? his dad was english and his mom was indian, and his dad was part of the british nobility that turned India into a colony? i thought i remembered something like that.
I'm not sure if they necessarily respected each other so much as saw each other as a means to an end. Jack needed a first mate and here was a decent sailor and natural leader and Barbossa probably planned on eventually taking a ship and might have heard Jack's reputation and thought he could mooch off that. So by the time he was captain, people would already know him, see? Do you think that's possible?

you mean he would be known as a tremendous pirate and first mate and somehow the captain of the ship he sails on dissapears and naturally he becomes captain? b/c if thats what your sayin' iu agree and think its possible
I was wondering b/c i was trying to think about the people who have berayed him one is barbosa and i was thinkin' if it would have effected him like lizzies betrayal will b/c he trusted lizzie a lot. im just wondering if he put that much trust in barbosa
i mean he would have to to tell him the coordinates of Isla de Muerta. Right?
