I thought Mephisto is not technically a demon. At least this was stated in Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
I'm going by how Marvel classified them in their own handbook 😄
Set, Chthon, Shuma-Gorath, Mephisto, Dweller in Darkness, etc.. are all classified as demons. They are further broken down into 3 classes of demons that I can't remember off the top of my head.

This post is to me Guy? I don't know 🙂 They just listed a whole bunch of beings they classified as demons and then split them into categories depending on their origin. Here's the list :

Set.What other demon has gone toe to toe with Demogorge for a million+ years before Demogorge got the upper hand? Or holding down/imprisoning Gaea, another Elder God, against her will, while fighting off Demogorge?
What other demon caused Strange to call upon his artifacts and back that spell up with the power of Cosmic Cube to exorcise his influence from Earth and then the Cosmic Cube's power was exhausted in the process?
His feats dwarf any other demon in marvel
Set>celestials >cosmic cube ( this was also around the time the celestials puncked odin zeus and vishnu)

Shouldn't Zom be the strongest demon then? I thought the Living Tribunal was required to directly intervene to deal with him.
Zom (and to a greater extent Shuma-Gorath) are hard to place.
During Zom's introduction, he was needed to stop Umar's rampage on Earth that Ancient One or Dr. Strange couldn't handle. Strange released Zom and stated he was more dangerous than a dozen Umar's. Zom finds that skank, she attacks him, she comments that even shackled he's melting her spells like nothing, then she runs for her life.
You may think, well big deal, it's only Umar. What people don't understand, and what I couldn't put in Zom's respect thread (because they didn't involve him), was that Umar at the time of her introduction was made out to be a thread on the level of Dormammu and some comments by Strange and AO even stated that she was MORE powerful than Dormammu (keep in mind this is when she first made an appearance, I don't care how she was handled later). I can list examples and scans but I really can't get into it now.
Zom was shackled by Dormammu under circumstances unknown ages ago, then Eternity had to step in and finish the job by binding him in an amphora and placing him outside all space and time. This was all done off panel so we don't know what the exact conditions were that allowed Zom to be beaten like that.
Anyway, the LT shows up, annihilates Zom and Zom forever more existed as a shadow of his former self, the Zomling. People have to keep in mind all of Zom's appearances after this event aren't of full powered Zom, but of the Zomling, the fraction of his essence that survived the LT's attack.
It was stated in a later Dr. Strange arc, when the Zomling was accidentally freed, that the Zomling can absorb magical energy and eventually become the real Zom if given the opportunity. Dr. Strange, through an idiotic plot device (too stupid to even mention), recaptures and reseals the Zomling back in it's amphora.
Later , the Zomling is released to deal with WWH. He had WWH dead to rights till Strange started to fight his influence and that was that. Later still, Dr. Strange is shot dead and instead of dying, his link to the Zomling's power allows him to resurrect himself and beat the crap out of a room of assembled superhumans. His most recent showing has the CK ASKING the Zomling to join his cause. The very fact that he ASKED and not demanded is significant IMHO, showing that CK respects even the Zomlings power.

Actually Dweller in Darkness belongs in the Fearlords demon group along with Nightmare, D'spayre and others.
Depending on power, I think it's another classification system too with classes 1, 2, and 3.

Pretty meaningless feat seeing as he and 5 other of his friends died instantly in their combined super Hell Realm (meaning they were all at the peak of their power) at the hands of the Demogorge. Meanwhile Set fought him off for millions of years before Demogorge got the upper hand. The second time they fought, he had Gaea imprisoned against her will (something Thor didn't even think was possible) while battling Thor/Demogorge.
