He is a very powerful demon. He got a warning from LT in X-Men/Avengers

Yea Mephisto is pretty powerful. In Secret Wars when Dr. Doom stole the Beyonders power he was gonna raid Mephistos realm to get his mothers soul back or something. He wouldn't dare try it without it.

It also clearly shows that Mephisto holds back in every fight, so he can claim their soul.
