Pretty much, it all depends on who's using them too. My lovely Kayakat uses smileys, even though I tell her I hate them, but she uses them sparingly and only at times to convey her current eomtion. I still hate and will never use them.

I guess you're right. Some people use them just to make sure that a specific emotion is given off, while others overuse them to the point where it's too much.
