You started out trying to be all funny and smart saying "You know what they say" implying that there is a general phrase or idea that gets repeated often in the context. When called out on it you failed to produce it, because there isn't, because you weren't actually smart or funny, but stupid and dull trying to look smart and funny. So you wanted to cover up by making a complicated sentence and making it seem like a joke. You failed again. All in all, I did not misunderstand the situation, you just ****ed it up. As usually.
