Apparently by ANH, Obi-Wan & Owen didn't get along. What caused the rift? You'd think being given a child to raise in the family would make Owen grateful to Obi-Wan. Now the finale of ROTS is wonderful, but somehow Obi-Wan had to explain who this baby is, and who his father is and what happened to his father. Maybe Obi-Wan told just Beru, and didn't speak to Owen.
I don't get Owen's attitude about Obi-Wan about being a crazy old man. The guy gave them a child to rear, was Owen ticked off about having to raise the kid instead of going out and raising hell with his drinking buddies? Did Owen not want the baby? He didn't even leave the crater to go meet Obi-Wan! Maybe he's mad at Jedi.
The radio drama said one time Obi-Wan came around the homestead and Luke said Owen got "real mad." If Owen was concerned about Luke's safety, if he got mixed up with Obi-Wan, well those feelings were realized. Luke meets up with Obi-Wan, and soon, Owen and Beru are murdered!
I'm sure the rift could have been caused in the twenty years between ROTS and ANH. I have no problem with that. But listening to OB1 talk about Anakin and Owen he clearly suggests tehre were quarrels going on when Anakin was alive. The ' shouldn't follow old OB1 on some damn idealistic crusade like your father did' and the "doesn't hold your father's ideals" lines are pretty clear. I feel that at the time of ANH there was no such thing as child rearing Jedi. Maybe Ob1 came across and (almost) adult Anakin and tried to get himto come along because of his Force potential, hence a family clash. I dunno.
But now that monologue by OB1 just doesn't make much sense, unless he was going senile.

I think he lost the concept of sci-fi. You don't need to explain anything and you can avoid inconsistancies by just not showing it all but the major events.
Now the whole PT is a festival of recognisation and everyone meeting each other again as if a universe doesn't make a difference. I hardly saw anything of galactic events, only some minor ones which were everything but spectacular.
It was a nice soap story, though nothing I wanted to be a part of Star Wars. -_-
On the original topic: I find it odd as to how people don't think that Obi-Wan "recognized" them -- as there is absolutely nothing to support this statement, other than him not saying anything to them directly (and, of course, the obvious: that there are billions upon billions of droids in the galaxy that probably match their profile, or that are similar enough, and presumably at least a hundred thousand that have similar names).
Assuming that the obvious wasn't enough (and it really should be), and that he somehow knew what they were (perhaps the Force?): What do you expect him to do? Throw a huge party in honor of C-3P0? Get out a loudspeaker and cheer about how he's back? His focus is on Luke, and since he never really cared much about the droids anyway, why is he going to change now? There is no reason for Obi-Wan to say anything to either R2-D2 or C-3P0. There is no need to acknowledge them.
Asking "why didn't Ben recognize threepio" is akin to asking "why didn't Yoda recognize Mas Amedda" when he goes into Palpatine's office. There is no point in having any dialogue between them. It would be inappropriate and uncharacteristic. There is no evidence based solely from the absence of conversation that he doesn't. But yet, this odd myth survives.
So either the original question is flawed, or the answer is blindingly obvious.
