To the person who initially started this thread, DraconianDevil´s advice is so far the best, rent the movie judge for yourself and if you like it, then add it to your dvd collection, if not, fine as well.
Personally, SAW I is the best. Minimum budget, minimum set, and that claustrophobic vibe is delivered, first time I saw it -in a movie night when SAW II came out - they theatre screwed up and I saw 1/4th of it upside down, backwards considering plot as well as language. But the ending is just amazing. SAW II could not keep up with it, basically cause it was mostly a different script writer, less improvised and sorry, but a time twist can be seen relatively regularly on tv. SAW III, it´s a nice combination of HOME IMPROVEMENT and EMERGENCY ROOM and maybe DR. HOUSE. The traps were okay. That judge´s death was pure stupidity. SAW IV, well I´ll wait and see.
As for mindless violence. After Freddy, Michael, Jason, Black Christmas, Texas Chainsaws, Wrong Turns, Scream, I know what you did/will do/ are doing/ have done.... , and as has already been mentioned HOSTEL that argument is kind of rediculous. I am not claiming that horror has only to include visual violence, wolf Creek works a lot with imagination, partially so does SAW, but if you don´t like mindless violence, go back to BRING IT ON and AMERICAN PIE, it´s also franchising and the only thing that is mindless or actually just redundant is the plot.
