...about a gambler .

I possibly saw this film around ten years ago and don't know the title . It could have been set in the 1960's ( or 50's)-( USA ?!!!) It is about a short haired , reserved , non-attractive woman who unexpectedly meets a man ; by chance ( or so it seems ?) . I can't remember too much , though - She is single and not the type to be romanced or to go looking for love . She is stern . The man on the other hand spy's his chances and fools her into giving him money . She visits him at the local gambling den and falls in love with him and his witts. The film appears to be quite 'Arty' but has a sense of Thriller about it . It is set in the backstreets of the usa - downtown , and is quite eery . She finally decides to gamble her emotions on him and this is when he gets clever ; the man 'wins' her gullible affection and she gives him the money . In the end scene she confronts him as she has found out his 'game ' . They are in the empty bar that he frequents to play cards etc , and as they battle it out ( quite spooky and tense ) I think she gets a gun out and shoots him . It appears that She won 'The Game '

Not too sure about all the details and only vaguely remember her shooting him . The pace is slow , seductive and has an unexpected story line 😮

Does anyone know this old film about a pshycological thriller and card games ? It's not a well known film .
