Does anyone else have Peanut Butter Poisoning.........
As some of you may or may not know, I am addicted to peanut butter. I eat it almost every day, beit a spoonful or a PB&J, or on some crackers, or whatever else. There is an outbreak of E. Coli in certain batches of Peter Pan brand peanut butter and guess that I got one of them. The whole story is as follows:
Area merchants remove peanut butter from shelves
"Market Basket of Leesville removed possible tainted peanut butter off of their shelves after the Federal Drug Administration issued a recall notice explaining that salmonella had been linked to the product.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of Peter Pan and Great Value brands of peanut butter bearing the product code beginning with the numbers ?” located on the lid of the jar.
After hearing reports of a possible recall on Peter Pan brand peanut butter, Leesville grocery stores took action to protect their customers.
Even before the official recall was announced, area stores including Market Basket and Wal-Mart pulled possibly tainted products from their shelves.
Market Basket Dairy Manager, Gerald Moore, said that the store has pulled all containers of Peter Pan brand peanut butter which have a lot number beginning in 2111 printed on the lid.
Before the official recall notice, Keith Dauterive, of the store's home office, issued a memo to remove the product from the shelves. If customers bought the product of this lot number from Market Basket, they may “bring in the unused portion in the container for a refund or exchange of another brand.” Moore said.
Michael Parrott, store manager of the Leesville Wal-Mart Supercenter, said before the recall that “we pulled the Peter Pan and Great Value just in case; about a pallet of it.”
In a release by the FDA, consumers were warned not to eat certain jars of peanut butter because the product may be contaminated with salmonella.
In a study just released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it was reported that 288 cases of food borne illness in 39 states were attributed to the consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter. The report was submitted to the FDA on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
According to Lauren Mendes, Public Information Officer with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, there have been no confirmed cases of salmonella as a result of the peanut butter contamination in Louisiana, but they are monitoring the recall.
Randy Kay, Manager of the Vernon Parish Health Unit explained that his office was notified about the recall.
“Residents should check their peanut butter and if they find that they have some that may be contaminated they should not eat it. Throw it away or take it back to the store where they purchased it,” Kay said.
Kay also said that anyone feeling ill effects after eating peanut butter should seek immediate medical attention and notify the Vernon Parish Health Unit at 337-238-6410.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
Symptoms of food poisoning begin eight to 72 hours after eating food contaminated with salmonella. These include the traditional food poisoning symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and fever.
Symptoms generally last one to five days. Dehydration can be a complication in severe cases.
People generally recover without antibiotic treatment, although they may feel tired for about a week after the active symptoms subside."
I'm going back to bed. 🙁
