Not that these things mean anything to me, It's about time an indie feature took the statue home. Scorsese shouldn't win on his namesake alone, or out of pity. I don't think "The Departed" is Oscar material. It's unnecessarily violent, had a weak, tired plot and was way too drawn out for such a simplistic movie. "Babel" has been done 1,000 times before, and in entertaining fashion. "The Queen", I haven't seen. Same for "Letters", but war epics rarely get the nod.

I agree with you on a couple things and disagree with a couple of your points.

First off, these things really don't mean a thing, like you said, but I'm assuming you're just somewhat taking an interest in it because it's fun (like I am). Also, I would very much like to see an indie film get an Oscar for Best Picture, but I just don't think Little Miss Sunshine is that movie. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great, but just... not Oscar Material... it was no masterpiece or anything. Just a fun little film with a nice message to it.

The Departed was a lot better (in terms of who should win an Oscar) than Little Miss Sunshine, in my opinion. I respect your opinion of the movie, but personally, I think it was done fairly well and good enough to get the Oscar. It had good acting, a decent storyline, an ending you never saw coming, and it was entertaining. Not to mention the directing was above average, in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind Letters From Iwo Jima getting it either. 😉

With all of that being said, I'm not that interested in the Oscars this year. The line-up (for most categories) seems really... weak, I think.

HOLY SHIT.

The Departed won!

I was almost 100% that Peter O'Toole would win his "Mercy" Oscar.

Pretty predictable outcome 😬

Although there is no way that "I need to wake up" deserved to win best original song. It only won because the academy would give best picture to an inconvenient truth if it could

Same with Happy Feet, a crappy movie that only won because of its environmental message

Its About ****ing Time!!!

im sure some little whingeing prick will cry "merge" and u can close this but it deserves a temporary thread of its own at least

FINALLY!

not exactly the movie he deserved to win one for but its about damn time

Merge. 🙂

My thoughts exactly. I said tomy girlfriend that if he didn't win for "Goodfellas", he shouldn't nab it for "The Departed". But, congrats all the same. Best Picture was a bit of a surprise, though.

Happy to see Alan Arkin take one as well. I've liked him since "Slums of Beverly Hills".

The Oscars were on last nigth? ... wow..😑

Terribly disappointing for the most, especially Monster House losing out to Happy Feet...

Last year, all I wanted to win was March of the Penguins and Wallace and Gromit. Needless to say, that 2-for-2 performance sent me to bed a happy man.

I honestly don't care. As long as Clint and Martin get something.

I wouldn't mind Nolan getting best cinematog, though.

Clint's won plenty in the past 5 years alone

They were pretty popular weren't they? In the UK, I mean?

Well, these were my choices for my Oscar pool:

Picture: Departed
Director: Scorsese
Actor: Forest Whitaker
Actress: Helen Mirren
Sup. Actor: Eddie Murphy (I only backed him because he was the favorite, I'm very happy Arkin won)
Sup. Actress: Jennifer Hudson

^^^So close, yet so far. 😛

Those were my pics though.
