Not that these things mean anything to me, It's about time an indie feature took the statue home. Scorsese shouldn't win on his namesake alone, or out of pity. I don't think "The Departed" is Oscar material. It's unnecessarily violent, had a weak, tired plot and was way too drawn out for such a simplistic movie. "Babel" has been done 1,000 times before, and in entertaining fashion. "The Queen", I haven't seen. Same for "Letters", but war epics rarely get the nod.
I agree with you on a couple things and disagree with a couple of your points.
First off, these things really don't mean a thing, like you said, but I'm assuming you're just somewhat taking an interest in it because it's fun (like I am). Also, I would very much like to see an indie film get an Oscar for Best Picture, but I just don't think Little Miss Sunshine is that movie. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great, but just... not Oscar Material... it was no masterpiece or anything. Just a fun little film with a nice message to it.
The Departed was a lot better (in terms of who should win an Oscar) than Little Miss Sunshine, in my opinion. I respect your opinion of the movie, but personally, I think it was done fairly well and good enough to get the Oscar. It had good acting, a decent storyline, an ending you never saw coming, and it was entertaining. Not to mention the directing was above average, in my opinion.
I wouldn't mind Letters From Iwo Jima getting it either. 😉
With all of that being said, I'm not that interested in the Oscars this year. The line-up (for most categories) seems really... weak, I think.

My thoughts exactly. I said tomy girlfriend that if he didn't win for "Goodfellas", he shouldn't nab it for "The Departed". But, congrats all the same. Best Picture was a bit of a surprise, though.
Happy to see Alan Arkin take one as well. I've liked him since "Slums of Beverly Hills".
