unfortunately, i can't help you right now, if i actually can, because the program isn't with me right now. 😬
Sorry for not replying earlier, I've just read your post!
I use GIMP. I mark the shape I want to have (Jack 😉 ) with curves - that's how I make a path. Then I make a selection from the path. I inverse the selection and I create a mask (that way I mask the area that I don't want to have on my picture)
-creating a mask-
I add the mask to the layer with the picture. The area that is supposed to be seen is filled with white color and the invisible areas are filled with black color.
Then I get the black brush with very small size and I correct the imperfections.
You don't have to create mask, you can clean the pics, but then it's impossible to correct something if you cleaned it earlier. However you can use the same steps - create the path, create selection from the path, inverse the selection and then clean it. However it's difficult to create a good path. In Gimp the tool for that has an icon with nib. You just have to master that tool.
I've found that tutorial: http://www.elated.com/articles/paths-and-the-pen-tool/
Tell me if you use masks.
It's not important if you use Photoshop or Gimp, all programs allow us to use layers and masks 😉
If you don't know what I'm talking about tell me so, I'll try to explain it more.
I hope I didn't write a mess. 😄
