meh. i just finish seeing it. It was ok. It wasn't a "Gladiator" but I would've waited for a movie like "300" on DVD if i'da known it was gonna be like this. "300" didn't wow me, like "Sin City" did, when i left the theatre.
Mr. director & Frank Millar, a.k.a. a graphic novelist, I expected more detail in the battles and less flamboyancy. I couldn't get into the plethora of slow motion shots, either. I expected more. More gore, more decapitations. Like 90% of all killings were spear stabs. The spewed CGi blood needed work, too.
This is a movie that would've fared well a few years back.
But like i said the story was ok. I just wished the King and his Spartan army of 300 realized that there's a thin line between courage and stupidity.
But I loved the way Xerxes looked and how he sounded. And how he was first presented. What was he like 8-9 feet tall.
To me, "Sin City" was way better. imho.

Funny, I had the opposite reaction. I liked SIN CITY, but it was so slavishly faithful - down to being a word-for-word transcribing of the comics, that I had nothing new to chew on. It was made primarily for the people who had never read it. I like interpretation, instead of me being able to sit and wait for every scene I knew was coming, and exactly like the graphic novels. I became bored.
300 has more room for interpreting and exanding the story, while honouring Miller's look for the story. It felt more vital and more juiced, and I liked it better.
Like i said earlier. "300" just looks good. Meaning visually. If it weren't for it's visual look, it would've been a normal epic movie unlike the sweeping "Gladiator" or the monumental "Braveheart"
Seriously, ok imagine "300" visually looking like a regular movie, no graphics. Cut out all the CGI and look at it with just the standard movie camera look. It'd be a mediocre movie. "300"'s visuals carried it all the way. And as fantastic as the movie looked visually, entirely candy-coating the normalcy of the movie with CGI won't help it's story. And just like with video and PC games, graphics don't make it what it is. Content does.
I did like Xerxes and Golum on steroids characters though.
B+
I MST3K'd it mercilessly in the theater, but that was just because I was with my friend at the time. It was a decent action movie. You know, I've gotta say that it's not often enough these days that someone puts some real effort into a "big dumb action movie." Just because it's mindless entertainment doesn't mean you can just fill in the numbers to make it!
What it really brought to mind for me was old movies like Commando, or Cliffhanger, or well... basically any Schwarzenegger/Stalone movie from the 80's. Over-the-top, flamboyant testosterone that takes itself completely seriously. See, to do Mindless Action, you can't be self-aware or ironic about it. You have to focus on building up suspense within your own story, and take all this absurd cartoony machismo with a totally straight face.
Anyway, yeah, good movie. It's going in the DVD collection.
