Not necessary for making a good post. But because of the monotonous tone a post always makes, smilies help give the post the necessary intention (and reduces the probability of a post being taken the wrong way).
However, I do have a say on how I take a question. And since the manner in which I take the question lays the foundation to the reply I give, it is best to convey a post in the best possible manner to avoid, as you put it, stupid debates...

If you need smilies to make things clearer, instead of taking the logical route of just asking the guy, then you clearly have bigger issues and no right to try making yourself look any kind of smart.
You have a say on how you take it, not how he intended it. If he tells you he meant it one way, that's it. He's the source of his own comment, he's telling you how he meant it, so to sit there suggesting he meant it in the way you took it after that...it's ignorant.

Once again I never stated that it was something it was not. I said because he failed to say it to be something I did not take it to be, my opinion stemmed from what I had concluded to be my understanding of the question.

It's not lose/lose, you're taking it far too seriously.
I'm a bit guilty of giving idiotic debaters more time than they deserve after they've already crumbled, but either way, it's not lose/lose. People take them a bit too seriously, treating them like fights or wars.
It's odd. Although here that seems to be the case more so than anywhere, because here there's no subject to debate, it's almost always some wannabe trying to "own" people.
