Close refers to the making of friends. One moves up from being an acquaintance to friend. To become something less would mean to be a stranger. Since you know Marko enough that he isn't a stranger, and you are refuting being an acquaintance, it is not an assumption but a logical conclusion to conclude that you must in fact be friends.
