Music videos...stealing the show?

The whole music video thing has been really getting to me.

The fact that videos have become such a prominent part in the way the package is being marketed these days seems to have taken away from the luster of a lot of music over the past 3-4 years or so.

There's a growing amount of money and focus these days on artist’s music videos...They're basically like mini high-budget Hollywood films...flexing either incredible editing and effects, or big name stars...and it's gotten to the point where you have to start to think (especially with pop music) that artists are already considering their visual representation even while still making the song or album. It's like a new song and it's video are gonna be released as a unit...and that unit is what's gonna be pushed and sold...not really the music itself.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if a major breakthrough artist came out right now (something kick-ass and huge like Nirvana) and they just didn't have a single video for their 3 or 4 singles off their album?

Just having the music represent itself, and nothing else. It's music...it's on an album...and what it means to you is what you've imagined only in your head...and that's it. And you're not gonna see or hear this band's great new single while flipping through channels on your TV, or on YouTube...you're gonna get to experience it only when you press play on your CD player or iPod, or if it pops up on the radio or at a bar...and that's it.

Wow! Music...again. Cool.

Exactly.

I do watch the Tube music channel, all they play are live performances.

?

More people watch videos than ever before...hence the enormous investment in the videos and music channels themselves. Music execs know the importance of the visual element these days more than ever to give their artist a look or image that distinguishes and separates them from the enormous amount of music popping up via the many viable mediums that are now out there.

And this is not just aimed at pop and little girls wanting to dress like the next teen queen...this is artists all across the board trying to get that extra little advantage by putting an attention grabbing visual ID to the sound.

And music video stations have become so huge and have so many off-shoot channels right now it's getting ridiculous...and the variety of the channels (like an MTV talk show/video channel!) have cemented a new culture within the music business.

Video channels have become an ever-growing, multi-faceted, variety-type show business, and it's all because the music video has become just as, or in some cases more important than the song.

It's just weird how that's happened.

To whom have music videos become more important?

Traditional media is suffering. People hardly even watch news anymore, instead go straight for their computer. I think the reason the videos are grandiose (I wouldn't know, even MTV 2 has become just like MTV now..) is because of two things. A) Superficiality has become as important as the music these days, i.e. the "scene", and B) it's a last ditch effort to keep the music video alive.

It's incredibly easy to avoid music videos if you don't want to watch them.

Honestly, I never watch them at all unless someone sends me a youtube link telling me I HAVE to watch it and then maybe I'll take a look. But that's about it. I don't care about music videos, never have, and just simply ignore them.

channels like MTV are no longer about the music...music videos are no more about artistic integrity than they are flying in the air...they are merely a tv advertisement for a musician...no different from a tv advertisement for a soap powder...

the music execs know this and help promote thier product....and the soap powder manufacturers know that people still guzzle it up and so pay huge sums to advertise their products in the middle of advertisements for other products

so the whole thing is basically "the ad channel"

its been over a year since ive wasted my time watching a music video.

besides, about 96% of the songs i do listen to dont have a music video.

and maybe the reason why artists are shelling out massive amounts of money for 4 minutes of crap, is because they are trying to grab in more of an audience. which they fail miserably at.

Ditto... I may also look one out if I really, really love the song.

Outside of the hideously commercialised MTV video business, there is absolutely nothing wrong with music videos. It's just filmmaking, another form of art through which artists can both express and promote themselves. Music has been set to moving images ever since film cameras were first invented, and I've always found it fascinating to see how filmmakers reverse that formula and interpret the music through visuals. Of course, a lot of videos are very uninspired, but there are some which can bring whole new levels to the song itself.

i stopped watching videos, because there always the same videos over and over again. most of the music i dont want to hear in the first place.
