Weeell, the racism died out (mostly) about 13 years ago, when Apartheid ended.
And then the crime is pretty bad if you don't watch your step. But then again, tourists are quite well-protected from that if they don't, say, venture into the more hijack-prone areas like Soweto and certain parts of the cities.
If you go for the scenery and safaris and etcetera it's awesome and safe, though.
