Alright, what exactly does Chewbacca wear throughout the OT?

I mean, if those small boxes hold tools or something, why does he always wear it, and how in the world would you get tools out of solid boxes?

I'd like an in universe explanation if there is one, not like "Lucas didn't want Chewie to be plain." Because, we all know he could have just given him pants. ;-)

i think he's got food, O, condoms, toilet paper... everthing. i mean, if it's a utility belt, then shouldn't it have everything that he ever might need? i mean, batman had every gadget concievable to man and hten some in a smaller utility belt, so it only makes sense that he has everything he would ever need in there.
