Yes. They do these partcile collider test where the try to smash open atoms and get the quarks and stuff out. Damn interesting research. they found out already that the subatomic particles behave like a fluid and not like a gas, as was always assumed.
But they still need to shoot these little buggers with great speed over long distances, miles even, to make them crash so hard, the atoms burst open for a moment. Now what energy was involved in doing that?

Yes...awesome stuff. I believe they have observed particles defying the special theory of relativity on multiple levels....such as particles moving faster than light. (debatable, of course.) But the answer to your question is "magnetism". That magnetism is created by electricity. I am sure a "google" will answer any questions you have on particle accelerators.
