However, to answer your question, yes, they are. I guess the one saving grace is that it's a step in the right direction; They at least play instruments and write their own songs.

There is a first time for everything, and this would be one of those instances. I agree with Alpha Centauri.
Who cares what they are advertised as. Relient K are most definately NOT Christian Rock... but they get classed as such.
But, to answer your initial question, no. One of the defining points of "Boy Bands" or the manufactured music is that they do not write their own music and/or play their own instuments.
But, with bands like Panic! at the Disco, The Killers, Hellogoodbye or any other "pop indie" they do.
