Why does Anakin succumb to the dark side? In Episode 3, Palpatine makes Anakin his personal bodyguard. Subsequently, Mace Windu confronts Palpatine and Anakin ends up slaying Windu to protect Palpatine. This is when Anakin chooses to join the dark side.
