men who appear as though they are able to command resources. Its an evolutionary thing. eggs being rarer than sperm, females have had to save them for males who they can guarantee will be able to provide for the lineage of their genes.

Its a very strange counterbalance to the male desire to impregnate as many females as possible. Not to mention how complicated these issues become within human society.
