Okay my 7 year old chum...

Commas are used to break up clauses in a sentence, they are to tell the reader when a part of a sentence ends and where another begins. An easy way of telling when you need to write one is to read your piece of work back to yourself, if it makes sense then you're probably fine but if it doesn't, you'll probably need one.
