Lucky Star

So I decided to start watching this after hearing a lot of good things about it from my friends (I'm also on video programming staff for an anime convention so I'm scouting out things to show), and one episode in I'm already hooked. It's very silly, very funny, and incredibly cute. I don't think I've laughed this much watching an anime since I first watched FLCL or Di Gi Charat.

Anyone else watch this series?

Love this series, dispite all the negative reviews it got. Very cute anime with equally cute characters.

What is the humor like?

An ignorant first glance of it makes me think Azumanga Daioh or Strawberry Marshmallow. However, that is an ignorant first glance as I just pointed out.

It is rather like Azumanga Daioh, but I think it's much much funnier.

Most of the humor is just poking fun at or rambling about day to day stuff, or the occasionally random spazz-out. Things like talking about food for 10 minutes, or making fun of the characters for various reason (Konata, the main character, is a huge anime and video game obsessed geek who'll randomly go off about a game she's been playing or a convention or a new anime, and the rest of the characters will usually just stare at her and be like "I have no clue what you're talking about"😉.

There's also a lot of very funny one-liners - there's a 'mini-show' at the end called Lucky Channel, and one of the characters is Akira who looks like she's maybe 12. In one of the episodes they were talking about one of the characters of the main show and she comments that "Well, if the maniacs love her I must be a huge hit with the pedophiles". The humor in the show tends to swing from very silly to rather adult and it does so in a split second. There's also TONS of references to other anime, which I've been having fun picking out.

And then probably the best moment so far...the ending sequence of the show is the characters karaoke-ing various songs, mostly anime themes. And I nearly fell off my chair laughing when Konata sang the original theme to Dragonball Z (that goofy "Cha-la, Head Cha-la!" song).

It's a slice-of-life anime. In the anime there are actually things that the characters take up that you yourself actually wonder about. Or talk yo your friends about. Stuff you can relate to.

"Lucky ☆ Star's story portrays the lives of several school girls attending a Japanese high school with a very loose humor tone. The main heroine is Konata Izumi, an athletic and intelligent girl who, despite these attributes, is not in a sports club, and has low grades. Her laziness at school is due to her love for anime and video games and lack of interest in anything else. The serialization began with the four main characters in their first year of high school: Konata Izumi, Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara. As the story progresses, they move onto their second and third year."

Also note that the anime is listed under "Seinen" as in "generally targeted at an 18–30 year old male audience"

Well, my interest is piqued. I already looked it up on wikipedia and just wanted some outside input. I'll check it out soon.

Found it boring and the art style hurt my eyes.

I like slice of life stuff like Yotsuba and Azumanga but I just can't get myself to like this.

It's being dubbed into English and for once, I don't hate the voices 😛 Miyuki sounds kind of weird, but the rest are very good, Konata in particular.

💃 It's great that Lucky Star is being dubbed.

I just hope that the opening doesn't change because it's the cutest opening I've ever seen. 😄

Well, judging by the fact that the snippets of the opening in the trailer are the same as the original, I don't think they'll be changing it 😛 I don't think they bother with changing that anymore when they dub anime.

Which is good, as I love the opening 😄

Yep, it's one of my favorite anime openings.
