He's a loner, but loners are just choosy when it comes to friends. I think he's made a lot of progress in handling relationships.

Loner's not a bad term. It just describes someone who doesn't have a whole lot of friends and mostly keeps to him/herself. It doesn't mean they have no friends at all. He's choosy, like we all said.
