It only seemed like a chess game because Thor's mind was too simple to see the scope and size of the fight, so he saw something he could understand. In reality, it was a battle that, if Odin lost, would have basically destroyed the galaxy. In the end Odin and Dorm stalemated and Chaos & Order was forced back into balance.
