He is saying that Shakespeare, Joyce and Salinger were all quite able to produce "tone" and communicate their message a) by writing and b) without "emoticons", it is possible, not even very hard, though harder than, lets say, just to pretend it can't be done and post "🙂" repeatedly. So, maybe harder, yet more beautiful.

Have you ever read a novel, which uses emoticons? I sincerely hope they aren't the type of books you read.
Yes I have read a novel and many of them but that is just that a novel, they have many pages to develop the character and you learn their style of writing. In a post you get very few lines and you know nothing of the person writing the post most of the time. After awhile of conversing with someone you get to know them and their style and or personality. If someone just posts a few words and you don't know them how do you know their tone other than using text or graphic based keys?

The problem of course being that emoticons don't necessarily show the actual tone- they are merely another tool with which the writer attempts to convey their tone.

Hence Whirlysplat's ubiquitous 😉 , which was an attempt to convey a tone of knowing superiority, but actually highlighted the fact that he was at present punching himself in the face through angry salt tears.

Yes that is true, it all depends on the reader and how they read any written word even with emoticons. You could have a well written sentence explaining your view and depending on the reader could look at it completely different all together so unless you fully explain the detail of your message your tone or sarcasm can be mistaken. Emoticons are an attempt to convey that idea without writing lengthy text.

I do not appreciate your sexist implication... Man can be raped; woman can be rapist.

Depends where. In America penetration of anus / vagina with any object is rape. In UK, things are not defined as such thought.

Nope. Only men and ugly women can be rapists.

Hmm, in that case women are much to nice to be rapist and I still win the Internet.

Silly Brits.

What about the mouth though? If not, want to me up for some non-consenual, non-rape oral?
