Those people are just ignorant, though. They decide to follow what people say about what the Maya has said, without investigating it themselves. The Maya actually never believed that the world would end in 2012, which the movie "2012" should have mentioned.
The reasoning behind this belief is that the Maya has proven accurate in their prophecies before, but that doesn't change the fact that the Maya has never declared a date for the end of the world.
All that is from this, is the fact that the calendar of the Maya ends 2012. People have chosen to forget that the Maya people has had more than one calendar and they have all ended. What many also overlook, is the fact that the ending spoken of by the Maya is not the end of the world, it's the end of the era.
It's a new age after 2012, something will happen that will change the world. This can be interpreted differently. It can be the birth of a leader, it can be doomsday, it can be the fall of a nation or something as simple as a cosmical or realistic anomaly that challenge all that we know. For some reason, the Maya believed it necessary to start a new calendar after 2012, because of something having fundamentally changed.
The idea that the Maya believed our world would end 2012 is greatly misunderstood.
