Well DragonAge II is about a person and their family that escaped from the attack on Lothering during the Blight. Of course, you'll be confused as hell if you never played Origins (the first DragonAge game). They moved to somewhere and that's all I'm saying for now but point is, It's FREAKING AWESOME! I highly recommend you get it Starry. I think you would love it.
I took on the challenge of Dragon Age 2 once it was released, and after having done all the quests, cleared it and started fresh and strong with another save, I can with safety say that you do not need to have played Dragon Age: Origins in order to play Dragon Age 2. There's very little that happen in the first Dragon Age of necessity, that you don't hear of before it's necessary in Dragon Age 2.
There are details you'll lack unless you stumble across dialogues you don't come across if you strictly follow the main quest and talk only to the people you have to, like how there was a Sten of the Qun in Lothering. Things like the status of having the loyalty of a Mabari, and why it's such a big deal being a Witch of the Wild, or Flemeth.
These things, delightful knowledge as they may be, won't be necessary for a person to enjoy this second game. You don't need to know that the hero of Ferelden befriended a Qunari from Lothering, or what the political situation of Orzammar was like. I studied the game from an objective perspective as I went through it, to among other things present this case on forums and discussions, but also to potently analyze the story.
So I'm happy to inform that your premise is false. Starry, Etna and anyone else can play this game and enjoy it without having played or even heard of the first one. Sure, there will be some holes, but truth be told, those holes only exist for those of us who have played Dragon Age: Origins, and are already filled in for us as well (Making this a loop argument). It's just small things, minor details that make this more rewarding for those that played the first one. You recognize the world and some of the stories told and references made, that's about it.
So from all of me, to all of you: Go enjoy Dragon Age 2, even if you haven't played the first one! I do of course recommend people who haven't played Dragon Age: Origins to do that before they play Dragon Age 2. Not out of necessity, but because it's a wonderful world to get to know. It's well built, and you really become a part of it.
So while you'd enjoy Dragon Age 2, don't stress it. Play Dragon Age: Origins instead. It's an as enjoyable experience, and it gives you more meat on the bones for Dragon Age 2 (And you can use your Dragon Age: Origins save to influence the story of Dragon Age 2). It's also cheaper, and if you don't like the story in the first one, you don't have to get the second one and you end up saving a lot of money.

Likes: I am obviously a fan of My Little Pony (G4), cute things, art and theater. I like writing and dedicating myself to the momentary hobbies that I often get but end up tired of. Examples of such hobbies would be politics, history, music, teaching, sport and video games. Things that will never go away is my interest for cartoons (Disney and more), comics, movies and literature. I love to write and I love to read (Even though I have not read many books in my life) and I also like philosophy (Might be one of those momentary things 😛)
Dislikes: I dislike it when people are rude for no reason, when you say something you know you do not have to or when you make promises you are not certain you can keep. I hate being left hanging because someone says one thing and makes a last minute change in plans. Little as well as big, it does not really matter. It can be someone calling me, telling me he can not come for ice-cream as agreed because he bumped into a friend, or something big like agreeing to do something but ends up calling me, telling me he has a paper to write 😛 Selfish I suppose, but those are things I do not like.
