Nintendo didn't have anything to do with it.

The CD-i, as a result of the broken off deal with Phillips. Phillips had temporary license for the characters Link, Ganon, Zelda, and Mario.

They couldn't even call the games Zelda, the were "Link: faces of evil" and "The Wand of Gamelon". Nintendo never touched the games, and had no involvement or direction. They made no fail 😛
