A shovel cannot move on it's own, or make the decisions Link does, and given sentience a shovel surely would not choose to have it's head shoved into the dirt over and over for no benefit of it's own.

Link and Mario are the exact opposite of today's common pretentious badasses. They do not need to go out of their way to look badass, they don't need awesome names, or spikey hair, or oversized boots, or ridiculous looking weapons. They stomp ass in normal clothing and stupid hats. Link's sword doesn't look overly extravagant or anything, but it does work, and so does he. 😎
