Oh for god sakes. Would the psychiatrist just leave gamers alone?

...I actually agree with you for once.

I'm frightened.

Anyway, stuff like this annoys the crap out of me. No psychological study that has been done on this has actually stood up to peer review and actual scrutiny by others in the field, or the versions released to the public leave out very important key information.

The facts are this. Games do not make people violent, unless they are unable to differentiate fantasy from reality already. Basically, unless they're a very small child and you do not supervise them and remind them that "this is not real", or you give it to a person that already has mental issues and already has the idea of violence in their head or cannot tell the difference between fiction and reality, you're not going to have problems.

(back when I was doing psych, this was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to do research into myself, so I did a lot of research into the existing studies done. They're almost all junk, or leave out info like "If we gave little Jimmy GTA, he hit Suzie. But if we gave Timmy GTA and told him it wasn't real, he didn't hit anyone". NOT THAT ANYONE SHOULD GIVE A FIVE YEAR OLD GTA, but still.)

Mine too.

Only second?

i only read the first two paragraphs because im tired.

i dont see what the problem is though. if it becomes illegal to sell violent video games to children, so what? movie theaters cant sell tickets for adult movies to kids, and the world hasnt exploded or anything. worse case scenario if a kid realllllly wants a violent game she'll just harass her parent to buy it for her.

Because it's a stupid law that should not be needed. It's not the job of the government to parent children.

Selling R-rated movie tickets to minors is not illegal, btw.

Oh some local chain?

If Papa John's was put only second in national chains then I would be disappoint.

Prohibited, not illegal. It's a mandate imposed by the movie industry on itself, and even then it only requires than an adult be present.

The problem with actual federal legislation is that the government does not need to be involved in this at all. We have the ESRB, which does a perfectly acceptable job of supplying ratings already, and has the experience to back their decisions. Outlawing the sale of an adult game to a minor is the first step to government censoring of game content itself. The issue with sales and play is that irresponsible parents simply purchase M-rated games for their whining brats without looking into it at all.

TL;DR - Law is unnecessary, will likely be overly restrictive, and won't do jack shit anyway.

NY pizza sucks.

thats all true, but all im saying is that aside from the principle, which is what you guys seem to have a problem with, and i agree with you on that, what is the negative consequences of this? are there even any barring a possible slippery slope?

i should probably read the article. ๐Ÿ˜

Yeah, you should probably.

They want to criminalize selling games to minors. Not simply make it illegal, but make it something that you can get a jail sentence for. Simply because people don't want to parent their own children. The principle of it is bad enough.

Chicago pizza is godly. I admit to being biased, as I am a Chicagoan, but it is absolutely amazing.

Well, New Yorkers will of course vehemently defend their local pizza, but...

I've had local shop pizza in New York years ago, and local chain pizza in Chicago. As I enjoy my pizza when it's filling, I much prefer Chicago deep dish, filled with meat and cheese, over New York's thin, folded slices of nothing.

No Paste just...no...you outed yourself.
