Aura's right, that opening is awful and isn't even remotely suitable for Death Note in the slghtest. The actual anime is focused on characters thinking and on logical thought. Half the dialogue is inner monologue focused on them building up plans and thinking quickly. It is absolutely nothing like that piece of shit at all. The first one wasn't great but it was better than that:

I really disliked that they played up the silliness of the show in the dub and certain parts of the anime (Like that opening. I cringe at the shot with teh guy with the jewfro and the shotgun and sunglasses. Puke!). Yes, the potatoe chip scene was ludicrious, can we move on now? The shows about a man who murders millions of people and on his descent into madness. Its not supposed to be incredibly silly!

I think that is in part due to the main characters being silly even in the manga. Seriously, Mello is so dramatic with his chocolate bar, L is a pervert, and Near plays with toys. On the other end of the spectrum you have Light and Mikami using pens like swords.

That stuff's from the anime. Light and Mikami never do their retarded pen-slashes in the manga and Mello never does his dramatic chocolate bites either. Near playing with toys is treated more as being slightly creepy than silly imo.

Indeed, writing has to be spiced up for the show. And Mello did some dramatic chocolate biting in the manga. L is still a pervert and Near still has funny lines like "Mogi-san is some guy." Complete with an 8O look on his face.
