Quotations marks can be used for me than just a quote. Sometimes, they can be used to distance the writer form the words being used...as though that's not the term they wish to use. It can also be used ironically. In this particular instance, class, "place" is in quotes to show that "place" is not really the correct word for use. Since a web forum is not actually a place but a virtual medium of communication, "place" is used to show that abstraction and the main reason why quotes were used.

Meaning...it's ironic that I would use the world "place" when I damn well would never use such a term, IRLs, to describe a particular thread on a forum. (ie... pretty much the opposite of what I would say).

Forum....that's a metaphor for an actual physical place (reminds me of the ol' Greek direct democracy days). The abstraction is the virtual "place" of such a forum. If we were to really have a conversation at that place...we'd stand on top of the hard-drive that houses the VB Code that makes up this forum. 🙂
