Was this after it went on hiatus/took a break? I never watched any of the eps after the show came back on air after a 2-3 year break so that might be why I don't remember a change in the artstyle.

Same here, if you're referring to the episode I think you're referring to.
Eh, I guess so. So is Castlevania for that matter (at least Symphony of the Night). A lot of good sidescrollers can be pretty similar when it comes to exploration.
