The author of the Hunger Games has actually said that she had never read nor seen Battle Royale (or heard of it for that matter) until after she'd finished writing the book, and that the idea came from channel surfing between a reality show and a show with footage of the invasion of Iraq, and the two things kinda blended together.

I like the guy's intro paragraph. I will never understand America's preference for horrendous physical violence over sexual situations. Like, mass murder is perfectly fine. But god forbid you show two women kissing hurrr.
I bet most of their parents have no problem with their 12 year olds playing Gears of War.
And as its pointed out Swtor is rated T for Teen anyway. So kids shouldn't be playing anyway.

Plus these 'family values' guys seem to have no problem with Luke and Leia getting it on. Is Incest kids-friendly now?
Edit: Also its ****ing stupid to censor this about an MMO, in which the so-called 'children' can meet actual homosexuals all the time and chat with them.

Yeah I never quite got that. They complain about same sex relationships but ignore relationships with humanoid animals which you think would be a bigger issue.
I'm guessing they're thinking "yes son, you can date your sister since her gender is opposite of yours which means it's okay." facepalm
I agree, what's the point in complaining about a public game with those kind of characters when you're still gonna meet those kind of people in reality when they come to visit your lobby or whatever?

I'll never understand why parents do that. They're told the games they buy are M-rated, there's a list of things telling you of what will be in the game at the bottom of the back of the cover, and yet after seeing the stuff in-game, they want to complain about it even though they were fairly warned. They have no excuse other than "this will scar our children blah blah blah" THEN DON'T BUY IT! How many times do we have to tell them?
When someone's buying an M-rated game, we have to list off everything on the back of the case that says why it's rated that way. We'll slide for adults that are clearly buying the game for themselves, but adults buying them for their kids, hell no, they're listening to that whole spiel.
You have no idea how many times some complete moron will walk up with a copy of GTA or Saint's Row for their under-10 year old kid, wave off the rating, and be like "oh, it's nothing worse than what they see on TV." I dunno what kinda TV you're watching, but...yeah, it's a lot worse.
It's also ridiculous the number of parents that'll bring up a horribly violent M-rated game and ignore me explaining the extreme violence and gore to ask if there's any nudity. Because obviously their kid possibly seeing part of a boob is worse than being able to brutally murder numerous people.
Then again, this country very much likes to act like sex is a completely taboo and forbidden subject, and likes to go to lengths to avoid it, keep people ignorant of it, and ignore it, unless they're trying to legislate what people can do in their personal lives.
I can't wait to see the homophobes flip their shit when Guild Wars 2 comes out, to be honest. Because oh they are going to.

Why not? I've never heard of those three you've listed that supposedly influenced those things. I'd never heard of Battle Royale until I'd seen Kill Bill. It may be fairly well-known, but I'd hesitate to say it's the sort of mainstream thing that everyone knows.
It happens pretty frequently.
Like, for example, the RPs that GK and I play on here tend to mirror events that happen in the source material...despite the fact that every time that's happened, our games were written before the actual movie/TV episode/game/whatever was released.
It can be quite amusing, in fact 😛
