No-one is actually quite sure where that melody comes from, though it was in use for God Save the King for a hundred years before My Country tis of thee was written.

For no reason I have ever discerned, the traditional American graduation music is the first Pomp and Circumstance march, which includes Land of Hope and Glory, which is one of the candidates of the English (as opposed to UK) national anthem.
