No, it's actually hysterically back. It was obvious before that it was a shameless Brawl ripoff, and the game itself just confirms that. The method for actually scoring blows, and the game itself tries to be a cooler Brawl far too hard to actually be as much fun as the real thing.
It's like it's goals contradict itself and if it were a robot it would explode while screaming "Does not compute."
I don't know. There's just something about it that's so off. You technically die and get your kills without actually having any method of health. You spend your time fighting to build up your Super bar and have to hit enemies with a Super to kill them for a point.
And outside of that the game suffers from limited options. There's few characters and even fewer good ones, few stages and like no good ones, the items are scarce (though you can change that) and are hardly even usable. They last for such a short amount of time.
There's no story behind the story mode, either. You get an opening photo or two accompanied by a voiceover, and then a closing one once you finish.
No unlockables from what I saw, either. Granted I only played for a few hours.

Few good characters is questionable because it's subjective. I may like, say, Nathan Drake while others hate him and so on. Or you'll just have no opinion on them. And the stages actually sound like a lot of fun.
Story modes are never the main thing for fighting games. Smash Bros didn't get one until Brawl really and that one was far from perfect(mostly due to the design, not the actually alright writing).
Not really needed.
The biggest reservation I have for getting the game is this whole DLC crap. Why do games bother with that crap? If I want to buy a book, I buy a book. If I want to buy a movie, I buy a movie. I don't buy uncompleted versions of either and then get the extra parts later. I get them up front. I get that game design is far more complex and takes longer but I really just don't want to bother.

Has anyone ever read the MLP fanfic called Slendermane? It is so emotionally disturbing and felt like it trolled my fandom a bit but compared to Cupcakes, it could've been worse. I actually kinda wish that thing appeared in Scootaloo's episode when she's having her nightmares in the woods. Would've made a nice nod to a certain infamous independent PC game dontcha think?
