Most games are better then Halo, I don't understand where the hype comes from.
Halo is as popular as it is, basically, because when the Xbox came out it was the only game on the system, and because FPSs/shooters in general were rare other than on the PC at the time.
So basically, if you wanted to play an FPS and not have to spend a couple thousand dollars on a gaming computer, Halo was more or less the only option.

Popularity by necessity and dearth of style, pretty much.
Yuuuuup. Halo 2 and 3 basically sold because of the name. I mean, I can't count how many people have said that Halo 2 is inferior to the first and Halo 3 is really more like Halo 2.5.
If there had been other shooters out at the time, then Halo would have gotten stomped.

I was lying.
Halo 2's storyline is better than threes, but Halo 1's was really good as well.
And, about Halo's quality as a game in general, I don't really see what the gripe is. Yeah, it's unoriginal and overrated, but I personally see the gameplay in it as superior to the gameplay in, say, Gears of War and even Call of Duty. Especially 5.
In fact, I'd say that it's one of the msot balanced shooters I have ever played.
