I posted what Superman saw in his end of the battle and it was quite different than what happened in the actual battle.
That battle at best was a nice durability showing for her more than anything else. Even with Clark not truly being able to battle her she was on the desperate side.

i saw a really good thread a while back on another site talking about how simone always loves to stick young blonde men in her stories (savant in BOP, tresser in ww), and so on and give them huge roles...

Wow. You really take this stuff seriously.
The bottom line is in Sacrifice he was trying to make Doomsday suffer for Lois' death. If you are making someone suffer, you are not taking the expedient route to victory.
Plus, if Superman wasn't able to hold back despite Max's influence, Batman wouldn't have survived his encounter.
