Cat predicts death!

From the news;

A US cat that is reportedly able to sense when a nursing home's residents are about to die is baffling doctors.

The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses.

After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He’d sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people who would wind up dying in a few hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

Psychic cat, or is there a more natural explaination? Still a pretty weird story!

The cat didn't actually know they were going to die, the cat just sensed a change in the person that it was around. Kind of like horses sense fear.

From a natural point of observation, I think it might be possible that the cat is really aware of imminent death. Predators mostly pick the weak and dying to prey on, and seem to be able to detect those even if it's not instantly notable. Probably all explainable by combined use of known senses, but I think it's plausible that they 'see' death coming.

Possible, of course, but doubtful (in my opinion) because of the way domesticated animals have acted in the past. I watch Animal Planet hehe.

Animals have been well documented with the ability to smell changes to other animals such as their prey or pack members of a “not right” smell normally which means illness or other types or ailments.

That's exactly what I said in my first post in here, they have the ability to sense fear and changes in people, so that could definately mean that the cat sensed a "change" but did not know they were going to "die."

As for the cat knowing they are going to die maybe, there are many other factors to take into account but we can not know for sure because it can not tell us. It can be that they may know they are about to die from past experiences such as the smell they get and a few hours later they are dead so the cat make the correlation between that smell in humans and death. Now does it care that they are about to die or that it learned that when it smells this scent that soon a bunch of humans will come in and give it attention soon when the human starts to die and all the machines start to go off.
