The stunner had gained force and speed through the help of the wind. But just before the spell hit Deren, he pointed his wand at Harry’s feet. Instantaneously the floor jutted up and hit the bottom of the chandelier, forcing the direction of the wind upward. Though the wind strengthened the stunner, it also now controlled its destination, and when the wind changed direction, so did the stunner. It fizzled out once it hit the ceiling, a fruitless effort on Harry’s part. While Harry watched astounded at the chain events that were taking place, Deren yelled a curse at Harry.
“Crucio!” Harry fell to the floor in agony. Feeling the white-hot needles pierce his skin over and over again, Harry also felt something in his body. A presence much like the one he felt once he entered the house. A voice stirred in his head, but it was not his conscience.
So, I have finally got you. I am surprised you lasted this long, Deren’s voice. It was full of contempt and pity. Harry did not understand how Deren got in his head. Even throughout this pain that he was enduring, Harry kept his Occlumency shield up. Yes, and it is a very pathetic attempt at Occlumency, Mr. Potter. I have been reading your thoughts the entire time, only you could not detect my presence, because I was hiding, secretly exploring your mind as we fought. And now I have an idea of how the great Mr. Potter defeated my mentor. Harry shrieked with pain as the thought of Voldemort’s defeat concentrated the power of the Cruciatus Curse. Harry was going to lose consciousness, he knew.
I am disappointed in you. I thought that you would’ve used any tactic at all to win, considering what’s on the line for you. But you used no dark magic at all. What is it, Potter? Are those techniques too dirty for you? Are you so high up on the pedestal of greatness that you would not stoop to such levels? Well, now you have been defeated. I have only a single regret, which is that I won’t get to see the despair upon your face when you see your family killed. Oh yes, you can rest assured that your wife and children will be joining you shortly in the afterlife.
At the mention of his family dying, Harry’s eyes glowed red. He would not let them be murdered. Harry would rather die saving them than join them after death. Harry thrashed about, trying determinedly to shake off the pain. He then yelled to increase his adrenaline, and doing so, Deren was surprised and the connection weakened. Harry used this chance to get up and run to his fallen wand. A killing curse flew by his ear as he dove for his wand.
Turning on his back once he had grasped it, Harry shot spells so quickly at Deren, that only the first few were blocked or parried. But the stunners and disarming spells hit Deren’s body like bullets from a Muggle machine gun.
Deren fell to the floor unconscious. Harry got up, weaker than he had ever felt in his life. He had been under the Cruciatus Curse for a good five minutes. Harry stumbled over to the door of the room, eager to save his children. As soon as he left the room however, Deren’s voice erupted in his mind once again.
If you are hearing this, Mr. Potter, than you have defeated me. Or should I say you have abandoned our duel. If you had truly defeated me, and I dead, you would not be hearing this. No, instead you have left me unconscious. This was not a part of the deal. For that, Lily shall be killed. Instructions for this order have already been sent and the order has most likely already been carried out. Also, James shall be killed. I have sent this order because you did not submit to my questioning. My final question was if you would bring back your mother and father. You replied that it was impossible. I do not believe I asked if it was impossible, only if you would do it, given the opportunity. You may still save your son, Albus, if you can rescue him in time, otherwise he shall be killed in five minutes. Until we meet again, Mr. Potter.
The voice stopped as abruptly as it had started. Harry rushed throughout the house, looking for his son or any signs of life at all. Harry panicked because of the news that his daughter and eldest son were already dead.
Harry rushed into his former bedroom and tore it apart. He looked under the bed for a trapdoor, but to no avail. Wildly, he threw the closet door open. There, slumped at the floor, was James Potter’s lifeless body. A loss for speech, Harry sent the body to Godric’s Hollow. Looking for Albus Harry next came upon the body of Lily inside Dudley’s old room. Sending it to Godric’s Hollow, Harry let tears pour down his face as he frantically searched for his living son.
Harry saw a swish of a cloak near his left, and he fired a Stunner. A body crumpled to the floor and when he checked it out, it was his son. However, there was a glaze in his eyes, telling Harry that he had been Imperiused. Looking around for any enemies, Harry Apparated with his son to Godric’s Hollow. He Apparated away from all the pain, misery, and malice that destroyed a part of his family.
Away from the deadliest man since Voldemort terrorized Harry’s life.
